NYTimes Music Store

The New York Times has entered the fray of music downloads. When we got the Sunday Times, there was an insert offering two free music downloads so I went to the free music downloads site, and after entering the numbers that came with the insert, I ended up at the new Times store.

Interesting. Though the site FAQ claims that the store is accessible to iPod users, many of the songs available for download are in the proprietary WMA format. The rest of them are MP3 format, but the mp3s tend to be older songs. Something else that is different from stores like Apple’s iTunes Store and Amazon’s MP3 downloads is that rather than listing the songs’ prices, you are told how many points you need to purchase the songs. Right now, a single will cost you 89 points or if you would rather pay cash,…99 cents. The store offers point incentives if you recommend a song to a friend and they buy it.

I could get New Soul by Yael Naim at Amazon for 89 cents and at a higher recorded bit rate.

Just my opinion, but I think the Times has a way to go. Maybe I’m just mad because the welcome sign says “Welcome back, null.”

good night, and good luck

I saw the above named movie today. Very nice, and really well done. I was a little surprised because it is not so much about Edward R. Murrow as it is about a time period that seems to parallel our present situation as seen through the eyes of those who lived through it. It’s uplifting, in that despite the many pressures to “just go along,” Murrow and his colleagues make some really tough decisions.

The movie is shot in black and white, and the lighting is superb and dramatic. If you’ve ever wondered why so many of today’s photographers love b/w… this movie will show you why.

I’d say this is a must see movie for anyone who does not understand why so many of us are upset by the present administration’s policies and tactics.

In addition to the well told story, the music is fantastic. Go see it if you get a chance.

(click to enlarge) I love it!!! Thanks to Mary at Knock-Knock who thanks Sumo Merriment. Meanwhile, call you senators and tell them to filibuster the Alito nomination.

music & light show

I tried to resist the hype,… I really did, but when I got an email similar to this video I couldn’t help but smile.

You can find out a little bit about Carson Williams (the artist?/author?) and his fantastic Christmas lights display in Mason Ohio on the CBS web site. I especially liked the peace symbol.

If you liked the music (Wizards in Winter) go to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra web site, where an excerpt is played, or go to iTunes and download it.

Enjoy.

black eyed peas

I just downloaded a song (iTunes) from the Black Eyed Peas’ newest album (Monkey Business), called Union.

The melody is from Sting’s Englishman in New York, and I’m pretty sure Sting is singing a few lines in it even though he’s not credited in the info. If you have access to iTunes, you’ll like it if for no other reason than the lyrics.

There seem to be a few good songs on the album. No, I am not affiliated with them or iTunes or Sting. ;)

there i go

I was watching American Idol the other night (I know, but sometimes you just want to be entertained), when one of the contestants came on and sang a song that I remembered hearing on the radio often when I was in school.

A Google search on the words gave me the title: Moody’s Mood For Love. When I searched for it on iTunes though, none of the hits I got was the one I remembered.

Now the technology really is impressive since in 15 minutes, I went from just knowing some words to finding out the title and even had to ability to download a song. That’s great, but I still can’t find the version I remember from my youth. It was a theme song on one of WBLS radio station shows here in New York. If anyone knows the artist who sang that version, please email me the answer. Thanks.
