I saw Million Dollar Baby last weekend and it is a well crafted movie with strong performances by Morgan Freeman and Hillary Swank. It was not however, in my opinion, the best picture of the year and I hadn’t even seen all of the nominations. I still think Clint Eastwood’s best directorial display was for Unforgiven, and M$B doesn’t hold a candle to that movie. it’s not that it’s a bad movie, it is just kinda formulaic.
The most overlooked picture was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Smart, well written, good performances especially by Kate Winslet (and Jim Carrey is held in check). Buy it for your collection.
And another thing. How is it that House of Flying Daggers does not win for special effects or cinematography? What a beautifully shot film. Go see it or buy it.
I like Sean Penn, but is he really that dense, that he can’t laugh at a joke about (I’m guessing his friend) Jude Law? Anyone know if it’s true that Robin Williams was censored last night?
Meanwhile, I wonder how much flack Chris Rock will get for his on target description of the bush administration. I thought the routine was hilarious.
